I can't for the life of me understand why they don't just shoot a few of them. Problem solved.

Sounds like a good plan, but police aren't allowed to draw their firearms unless they have reason to fear for their life. Which is what happened in the first place.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission has announced there is no evidence that Mark Duggan, whose death in a police shoot-out led to the London riots, fired on police before he was killed. However, a loaded handgun was recovered from the scene. This is all consistent with the account of the officers on the scene, who never claimed Duggan fired on them first. The officer who fired the shot is believed to have acted because he feared for his life.
If Mr. Duggan aimed at officers, they had every right to open fire (at least in the US, I don't know much about UK law). If he didn't aim at officers, then the officer who fired should be suspended for some time. It's not that police are "trigger happy", it's that when you're in pursuit, your adrenaline levels are crazy high. You react quicker, more harsh, and out of pure instinct. Training and experience may go out the window when confronted with dangerous situations. If you run from police, they assume you're dangerous. There is no reason to run from the police. That's why police always seem to beat the shit out of people, it's for THEIR safety.
These riots piss me off. Police get enough ignorant flak for doing their job of Law Enforcement, if you're dumb enough to commit a major crime, you're dumb enough to get potentially shot by the police. It's their job to stop you.
Fuck you rioters, you're scum.
EDIT: obviously this is only aimed towards the rioters freaking out about the shooting incident. The political part of the riots I'm not too sure entirely whats going on.

I understand they can't, but I have to think that if a crowd of these Blackberry Freedom Fighters, or whatever the fuck they think they are, saw the head of the guy at the front of the crowd vanish in a spray of fine red mist and bone, they'd find their way back to their parents basement fairly quickly and spend some quality time with their Tickle Me Elmo's.
Loved the story today about the parents who recognized tgheir daughter on TV and turned her in. She was an Olympics organizer for Chrissakes. I just don't know what's wrong woth people.

I loved this story. I also loved the parent's response of "sure she's our daughter, but she was breaking the law and turning her in was right." (obvious paraphrase but you get the jist)
I would like to point out that the petition on the UK government website for all convicted rioters to lose all benefit has reached the 100k signature limit to probably be discussed in Parliament. I'd link it but I can't even get on to the website let alone re-find the link to that petition.

Is there a death toll from all the crap they're destroying and burning? I'd hate to think that a few innocent bystanders and a few innocents cops have died from people's stupidity.

I think the death toll is about 3-5 depending on what source you read. Hell, one guy was smacked in the jaw so hard that he will need reconstructive surgery (I think he needs surgery) and people pretended to help him up while they stole from his backpack. Scum.
